Peach Baseball splits with Mary Persons
It was a dominant performance by Peach County Baseball on Friday, April 11 at home against Region 2-AAA top-seeded Mary Persons. The Trojans never trailed on the day for the first 13 innings of the double-header.
DJ Hudson started things off on the mound for the Trojans in Game One, pitching his best game of the season and returning to his true form. The junior right-hander scattered 5 hits over 7 innings, allowing all three runs in the top of the 6th inning. He settled back down in the 7th, and pitched a perfect frame.
The offense was led by timely hitting from freshman Wyatt Blanton, who was 2/3 in the game with 4 RBI. Torin Helms added a 1/2 performance with a double and 2 RBI. Bryce Harrelson was 1/2 with 2 Runs Scored. Zion Hudson also scored 2 runs in the game.
In Game Two, the Trojans scored 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning. DJ Hudson led off the game with a single up the middle. Bryce Harrelson hit into a fielder's choice, retiring DJ Hudson. Zion Hudson hit a double to RCF. Harrelson then scored on a wild pitch. Torin Helms drove in Hudson with a double down the LF line. That would be all the offensive support that Jackson Peavy would need. The lefthanded junior threw the next six inning before running out of pitches. Peavy allowed no hits and struck out 12. He was relieved in the 7th by freshman Jaden Jones, who allowed 4 runs (0 Earned) on 2 walks, 1 hit, and 3 untimely defensive errors.
"We did not do a good job of supporting Jaden when he went to the mound in the 7th. Youth and Inexperience reared their ugly head that inning. We will be working hard to straighten out the mistakes that were made," said Coach Joey Hiller of his team's performance in the 7th.
"But I was so proud of the way our guys competed in this series. Mary Persons is the best hitting team in the Region, and it looks like they will be the Region Champion. We really competed. Aden New competed for us in Game One at their place in a 2-1 loss. DJ Hudson got after them on the mound today, and we had some nice timely hits. Jackson Peavy completely dominated them for 6 innings, striking out 12 and surrendering no hits. If he had more pitches left, we win this series, and they know it. We dominated that team for 13 innings today. I am very encouraged about how our team is progressing."
